SCHUMACHER 15th AFTER FIRST DAY OF ACTION

BAYTOWN, Tex., March 27 - Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, aboard his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, landed in the 15th starting position here Friday after the first day of qualifying for the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. The defending world champion smoked the tires in his only qualifying pass of the day (the second session was cancelled due to rain) and thus ended up in the bottom half of the field.

"Despite the result today, I can assure you that we're getting there," said the Chicago-area resident. "As I've stated in recent weeks, we're not where we want to be right now but it's going to get better real quick. We've got a hard-working group in our camp."

Schumacher, who captured 15 victories last year, is seeking his first win of the still young 2009 season.

"And, I'm looking for that to happen before too long," he added. "Of course, we're going after a trophy right here this weekend. It's just a matter of us building up a head of steam and then taking off."

The six-time champ arrived in Texas holding fifth-place in the standings, 78 points removed from Antron Brown in the top spot.

"The points are actually really tight right now," he added. "All it takes is for us to have one good race and we'll be in the thick of it. I'm not worried at all. We're going to take care of business."

Schumacher will have two more qualifying attempts on Saturday at 12 noon and 3:30 p.m. CT.
