JOHNSON JR. RACES TO NO. 6 QUALIFYING POSITION AT HOUSTON

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 1, 2006) – Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 6 qualifying position Satur! day at Houston Raceway Park after recording a 4.793-second pass, which came on his second of four qualifying attempts.

After racing to the fifth quickest run of the opening day of Funny Car qualifying at the 19th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals, Johnson backed up Friday's 4.793-second effort by powering his Skoal Racing flopper to a performance of 4.814 seconds at 322.27 mph on Saturday's first qualifying run. It was the third quickest pass of the session.

"Having a good, solid run in the heat of the day lets us know that we have a good car for that time of day," Johnson said. "As long as there isn't a drastic change with the weather, we should have a good go first round."

Johnson's quickest effort of his four qualifying attempts came on Friday's second pass when he used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to earn a 4.793, 326.40 pass under the lights at the Houston track. This marks the 19th time in his career that the seven-time NHRA winner has qualified sixth.

"We qualified well enough in the show that we tried to test a few things on the last shot," Johnson said. "That's the nice thing about qualifying well early. It didn't work, so we know not to do that on Sunday. We've got a good car, especially if it's going to be hot and sunny. We keep picking away at the tune-up on these new tires and we're getting better and better."

The veteran nitro pilot will face off against No. 11 qualifier Gary Densham in the first round of Funny Car eliminations, when professional eliminations kick-off at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday from Houston Raceway Park. The Iowa native if 8-8 in his career against Densham.
