JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO NO. 5 SPOT FRIDAY AT HOUSTON

BAYTOWN, Texas (March 31, 2006) -- Veteran NHRA driver Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the provisional No. 5 qualifying spot Friday at Houston Raceway Park.

The seven-time NHRA winner blasted his Mike Green-tuned Monte Carlo to a performance of 4.793 seconds at 326.40 mph to claim the fifth qualifying position on the first day of qualifying for the 19th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals. It was the fourth quickest run of Friday's second session. Johnson's opening attempt was disqualified when he crossed the center line.

"The car started to move around and hit some bumps on the track and shot left," Johnson said. "I tried to save it, but couldn't. The guys made a really nice recovery tonight. They were under pressure to get us in the show and we stepped it up. Tomorrow, we're going to try and work on the early numbers and improve our performance."

Johnson looks to improve upon his fifth-place ranking when Funny Car qualifying continues with sessions scheduled for 12:30 and 3 p.m. (ET) at the Baytown rack.
