CAPPS COLLECTS NO. 5 IN HOUSTON QUALIFYING
BAYTOWN, Texas (March 29, 2008) - Ron Capps came into the NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park with three goals: qualify, qualify in the top half, win the race. He and his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team can check off the first two, while the third remains to be accomplished in Sunday's eliminations.
Capps collected the No. 5 spot with a 4.886-second run at 310.05 mph he set in Friday's second qualifying session. His other passes were a 4.928/301.67, a tire-smoking 10.410/81.08 and finally a 5.738/170.79.
"It's great," said Capps. "We always have a couple of goals when we roll into a race, and the first goal is to qualify, and obviously we've seen how you can't overlook that simple goal, especially in the Funny Car division right now, because look at who didn't make it into the show: (points leader coming into the race) Robert Hight and Melanie Troxel. Our second goal is to try and get lane choice and qualify in the top half of the field.
"We achieved both of those goals. This weekend was precarious as far as the weather went. Nobody knew what was going to happen. Everybody was writing the whole race off (because of predictions of rain) and we ended up getting four runs in, and no sign of rain.
"A real pat on the butt to Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) and the NAPA guys. They did a heck of a job to qualify and get in the top of the field at this track. As you can see by the E.T.s, this track has been very tricky all weekend.
"So, two out of three goals are already set. Our third goal is to win the race. We just need to concentrate on first round and see what the weather brings tomorrow."
Capps faces Tim Wilkerson in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday.
