CAPPS SNAGS NO. 14 IN SHORTENED HOUSTON QUALIFYING

BAYTOWN, Texas (March 28, 2009) - After a rain delay and subsequent moisture on the track cancelled Friday's second qualifying session, Ron Capps qualified the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Funny Car in No. 14 following today's two rounds under considerably cooler and drier conditions.

Capps' first run on Friday, a 4.194-second pass at 298.14 mph, vaulted him to second place for the day, but today's tire-smoking attempts resulted in a 6.516/95.94 (No. 9) and a 5.291/137.33, dropping him to 14th.

"Obviously, conditions are a little tough," he said. "The track is definitely giving the crew chiefs fits out here. The right lane has been difficult to get down all weekend and we tried to up ourselves in the qualifying order and it just pulled the tires loose a couple of seconds into this last run.

"Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) is being aggressive. We talked at the beginning of the season about coming out and being as aggressive as you can on a run to try to better yourself in qualifying. So, we didn't just want to go down the track; we wanted to move up. And sometimes when it smokes the tires like that I know that Ace is really getting after it and trying to make a run that could get the pole position. That excites me.

"I know that we will have a great car on race day. We've already tested the waters to see what each lane would hold today and what it wouldn't hold. That being said, as I always do, I feel very confident for Sunday."
