'Hot Rod's' wild weekend turns to elimination racing

HOUSTON (April 1) -- There was no fooling around for Top Fuel driver "Hot Rod" Fuller at Houston Raceway Park this April Fool's weekend. After two days of wild qualifying action at the 19th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals, Fuller finds himself positioned in the sixth slot overall with a best time of 4.561 seconds at 327 mph.

Fuller may not have qualified on top of the star-studded elimination ladder, but he certainly got the attention of the capacity crowd at his adopted home track of Houston Raceway Park. During the opening time trial session, Fuller's David Powers Homes/Valvoline dragster hiked its' front end up in the air as far as the wheelie bars would allow on two separate occasions, drawing a large collective gasp from the fans.

"It was a wild ride, for sure," said Fuller, who managed to keep the car safe after his wheelstands and make three other perfect passes on the weekend. "Lee (Beard, crew chief) had her hopped up just a little too much but he's got a great handle on it now and we're very confident heading into race day."

Since Houston is home for the David Powers Motorsports operation, a win would be a fitting crown for the many of the team owners' guests that are in attendance. Fuller has already proven himself a winner this season with a big win in Phoenix. He's currently second in the world rankings and could potentially leave Houston with the POWERade point lead.
