FULLER DRIVES MUSTANG CAT RAIL TO LUCKY 13TH QUALIFYING SPOT
BAYTOWN, Texas (March 29, 2008) --Rod Fuller drove his David Powers-owned Mustang Cat dragster to the No. 13 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Houston Raceway Park. Competing at the hometown of Powers, Fuller used a qualifying-best run of 4.684 seconds to make the cut for the 21st annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals.
Fuller entered the final day of qualifying for the O'Reilly Spring Nationals on the outside of the 16-car field after the Mustang Cat/Valvoline dragster dropped a cylinder on both of Friday's qualifying attempts. The six-time NHRA winner was ranked 17th going into the final day of qualifying at the Baytown track. Fuller used a tune-up from crew chief Rob Flynn to power the Mustang Cat/Direct Energy dragster to a pass of 4.684 seconds at 308.07 mph to move to 13th in the order. It was the third quickest pass of Saturday's first session. The yellow-and-black dragster lost traction on its final attempt of the weekend and Fuller remained 13th in the 16-car field. It is the third time in his career that he qualified 13th.
"It was tricky out here this weekend," Fuller said. "For some reason, our tune-up doesn't seem to work great at Houston. We brought out a new car this weekend and we're working out the new car bugs. We made a good first run today and we're confident we have a handle on things for Sunday."
Fuller will face off against No. 4 qualifier Cory McClenathan in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (CT) at Houston Raceway Park. Fuller is 3-5 in his career against the 29-time Top Fuel winner.
