Stivers' Trane rolls past round one in Houston

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 10, 2010) - Trane-sponsored Rick Stivers won his first round of the 2010 Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series season by defeating Troy Coughlin in the opening round of eliminations Saturday at the NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

Rain claimed the final round of qualifying, causing the field to be set based on Friday's qualifying results, placing Stivers and his supercharged '06 Stratus in the No. 8 spot and pairing him with No. 9-qualifying Troy Coughlin and his nitrous-powered '68 Camaro.

Stivers took a very slight lead off the starting line and never trailed in the race, running 6.041 seconds at 211.43 mph to Coughlin's 6.071 at 232.75 mph. Stivers margin of victory was approximately 11 feet.

"That race was a lot closer than it should have been," Stivers said. "I was on a great pass, but at about 1,000 feet I got a gust of wind or something and was forced out of the groove over toward the wall and I had to pedal it to keep it going straight. It never really got out of shape, but I definitely had to drive it hard to get the win."

"I know Brad [Anderson, team owner and crew chief] and all of the guys will take a really good look at everything to make sure there's nothing in the engine or the car that caused the car to swerve like that, and I'm confident that come tomorrow, we'll have the baddest hot rod out there," he said.
