Lucas and GEICO crew sticking to game plan
HOUSTON (March 24) -- Top Fuel racer Morgan Lucas is off to great start in 2009, racing to one semifinal and two quarterfinal finishes in the first three races of the season. It's one of the major reasons why the driver of the 8,000-horsepower GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster is excited about this weekend's 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park.
"Our crew chief Jimmy Walsh has a plan and so far it's working pretty well," Lucas said. "The first priority is to make the car so consistent that it always goes down the racetrack, no matter the conditions. Some teams like to race for the big numbers on the scoreboard but when you push your tune-up that hard, you're taking chances.
"We'd rather have a car that everyone knows is going to get from A-to-B every time so they feel like they need to really come after us. Let the other guys make mistakes. We just want to win."
This will be the sixth visit to HRP for the 26-year-old Lucas. His best finish at the southeast Texas facility is a semifinal appearance in 2005.
"It's a great track and the conditions can be really fast," Lucas said. "The Angel family has put a lot of money into the facility in the last 18 months and I've heard that the racing surface itself is 100-percent better than it was a year ago. They had it ground down and leveled. It should be wicked quick.
"Jimmy likes to make horsepower and there's nothing better than when we go to tracks where we can pour it on. Looking at the forecast, we might be in for a huge performance weekend. I know we'll be ready to go."
A native of California, Lucas now lives in Indianapolis where his two-car team's race shop is located. He is a 10-time national event winner with all 10 victories coming in his Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Dragster.
