White looking to start early season run in Houston
BAYTOWN, Texas - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Marc White and the Etterman Racing team will enter the 2002 NHRA Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Houston Raceway Park with one goal in mind: getting a run on the Division 3 (North-Central US) points chase.
After coming up just two rounds short in a season-long points battle with Division 3 rival Chuck Cheeseman in last year's standings, White and team are anxious for the fresh start. The Glendale Heights, Ill., native hopes to net a strong finish in Houston to give him a head start on his Division 3 competition.
"We're actually trying to get a head start," said White. "We have kind of adopted the attitude that we would like to run at some of the better racetracks, and skip some of the ones that are a little marginal. Houston has always been a good track, and we generally run pretty good down there, so we figured 'why not start there."
With cool weather conditions forecasted for this weekend, White feels that the cars may be making so much horsepower that it may make a track as highly regarded as Houston Raceway Park difficult to navigate.
"We'll kind of have to play it by ear," commented White. "We'll definitely have 5.60 air, but we may not have a 5.60 racetrack. If the racetrack is in good shape, you can definitely bet we'll be able to go very, very fast there. I think that a lot of cars could be in the 5.60's if the air and the track are in good shape. Like always, we'll just try to go as fast as the conditions will allow us. Hopefully that is enough to go a few rounds."
After finishing seventh nationally and second in Division 3, White and team have their goals set slightly higher this year. White feels that the Division 3 Championship and a top five national finish aren't out of reach this season.
"I just want to win races," stated White. "If you win races, all that other stuff takes care of itself. Our goal is always to finish in the top five, and to win the division. Like I said, if you win races, all of that seems to take care of itself. I want to go fast, and be in contention at every race we go to."
Qualifying begins on Friday at 4 p.m. for the Top Alcohol Funny Cars with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in the world of alcohol racing.
