DIXON FINISHES EIGHTH FRIDAY AT GAINESVILLE

BAYTOWN, Texas (March 31, 2006) - Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon grabbed the provisional No. 8 qualifying position Friday at Houston Raceway Park to open qualifying for the 19th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals.

Dixon, the third winningest Top Fuel racer in NHRA history, opened qualifying at the ultra-quick Houston-area drag strip when he used a tune-up from crew chief Don Bender to card a run of 4.600 seconds at 325.45 mph in his Miller Lite rail. Dixon's speed was the fastest of the first qualifying session. He recorded top speed of the event at Houston Raceway Park two years ago. The Miller Lite dragster lost traction on Friday's second run as Dixon coasted to an 8.560-second pass.

"Just like the last race, once we got our car qualified, it allowed us the opportunity to try a few things and improve the performance of the car," Dixon said. "It was just too aggressive on the night run and spun the tires."

Professional nitro qualifying will resume with sessions schedule for 12:30 and 3 p.m. (CT) on Saturday in Baytown.
