Dixon Records Top Speed en route to No. 6 Qualifying Position on Friday at Houston

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 16, 2004) 0x2022 Two-time defending NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon raced to the No. 6 qualifying position Friday at Houston Raceway Park after powering his Dick LaHaie-tuned Miller Lite dragster to a run of 4.577 seconds at 324.75 mph 0x2022 top speed of the Top Fuel category.

On Dixon's first attempt of the weekend, his Miller Lite rail lost traction and slowed to a performance of 5.289 at 183.87. Dixon posted the quickest half-track elapsed time on the opening run. On Friday's second effort, he blasted the Miller-backed dragster to the No. 6 position.

"It spun the tires on the first pass, so we had to abort the run," Dixon said. "We hopped the car up a little bit knowing we had to make a good run to get solidly into the field, but nothing crazy. We wanted to get down the race track. We ended up sixth in the session and have top speed. That means things are coming together with this new combination."

Dixon aims to move up the Top Fuel ladder when qualifying continues at noon and 3 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 17 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.
