Monrovia, Md., Driver's Best Run Puts Him 15th

HOUSTON, Texas, March 29, 2008 -- Justin Humphreys, Bob Glidden and the RaceRedi motorsports team were happy to qualify 15th Saturday for Sunday's O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, but the perplexing thing was they know they should've run better.

Glidden, crew chief on the new Pontiac GXP that was making its second NHRA national event, shook his head and admitted there was a gremlin somewhere, but "I don't know where it is."

"We didn't make one good run here but we did make three competitive runs on an unpredictable race track," Humphreys said. "We know we have to get down unpredictable tracks like this one. We did qualify, but that's not where we want to be."

Ironically, his best run, 6.697 seconds, wasn't the one that placed him No. 15. It was the 6.701-second, 205.85-mph lap Saturday afternoon. NHRA's new qualifying system eliminates Friday qualifying times for drivers 13th and higher for Saturday, thereby giving those not in the top 12 a better opportunity to qualify.

Humphreys came back with a 6.709 on his final run which was a mirror image of the first one. "We blew the tires off the car on all four runs," he said. "We still have issues with the track."

Glidden, meanwhile, went right to work looking for a solution in time for Humphreys' first-round race against Allen Johnson (No. 2, 6.650 at 2-07.72 mph).
