Joe Baker Jumps to No. 3 after Semifinal Finish in Houston

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 11, 2010) - Joe Baker drove his '68 Firebird Pro Mod to a semifinal finish at the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series event at the NHRA Spring Nationals this weekend and moved into third place in the championship points race, just two points behind second place and only 14 points off the lead.

Baker qualified No. 10 with a 5.951-second pass at 243.50 mph and was paired with No. 7 qualifier Tim Tindle in the first round of eliminations Saturday night. Baker left the starting line first and never looked back, beating Tindle 5.976 to 9.568.

When eliminations continued Sunday afternoon, Baker was paired with 2009 World Champion Burton Auxier in his nitrous-powered '68 Camaro. Baker won the round before the light turned green as Auxier left the line early and forfeited the race.

In the semifinals, Baker was paired with California racer Danny Rowe. As the lights turned green, Baker took a slight advantage, but struggled with engine problems just after the launch and had to coast down the track, watching Rowe take the finish line in front of him. The semifinal finish pushed Baker into the No. 3 spot in Championship points after two of ten events.

"Overall, it was a good weekend," Baker said. "Even with the wild weather conditions - cool weather then hot tracks, rain and humidity to really dry - we were able to run pretty well.

"We had really good luck and the car ran really well as we went through the first two rounds, but I had some engine problems in that last round and it killed me to watch Danny just drive away from me, especially since he was having problems with his car, too, but that's racing. There was nothing I could do about it," Baker said.

"We're going to take everything back to the shop, make sure the car is in good shape, and then get ready for St. Louis," Baker said.

Next up for the Get Screened America Pro Mods is the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals in Madison, Illinois, just outside of St. Louis, Mo., April 30 - May 2.
