BECKMAN TAKES FIFTH IN HOUSTON QUALIFYING

BAYTOWN, Texas (March 28, 2009) - Jack Beckman made a solid jump in the qualifying order today after steering the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Funny Car from eighth place into fifth in the final of only three qualifying sessions held this weekend. A rain delay and moisture on the track cancelled Friday's second round.

Beckman's quick pass of 4.108 seconds at 299.53 mph bettered his two previous passes, a 5.552/131.56 and 4.183/284.99, to position him for a head-to-head matchup against Robert Hight in first round of Sunday's eliminations.

"This is what we need," said Beckman. "We're slowly getting last year's car back, which was the most consistent car out there and one of the quicker cars out there. And it's so satisfying to be a top-five car in qualifying.

"We know we can win from any position, especially when conditions are tricky out there, but there's no point going into Sunday with one strike against you not having lane choice and racing a higher-qualified car.

"That being said, our reward for qualifying well is we get Robert Hight first round. It's just a roll of the dice out here with nitro Funny Car. Even though the car counts are way down, the 16 that get in are all tough. I can't wait for tomorrow, though. It will be fun."
