Doug Kalitta is hoping Houston will be second in a string of NHRA wins
Houston, Tex., April 6, 2005 - To say that Kalitta Motorsports' Doug Kalitta is relieved would be an undeniable understatement. Doug, driver of the bright red Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, is a perennial NHRA championship contender. So, when the 2005 season started with two first round losses in the first two events, ever-calm Doug began to get a little worried, that was until his slump-breaking win at the previous NHRA event in Gainesville, Fla., where he won his sponsor's event, the Mac Tools Gatornationals.
This weekend, April 8-10, at the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Tex., just outside the Houston city limits, Doug is looking to continue his new found momentum with back-to-back victories.
"Gainesville was a huge win for our team," Doug, two-time Top Fuel points championship runner-up (2003-2004), said. "We really needed to go rounds and get a good performance, but to win the race and to win at a Mac Tools race was just incredible. We knew we had it in us. I'm just glad we were able to finally show it there.
"I'm really looking forward to Houston and getting back in the race car. We have a much better attitude in our pits now, and I want that to stay. We ran great there a couple of years ago, so I'm hoping we can recapture that performance and get two wins in a row and possibly more down the road."
Doug, 40, won the Houston event in 2003 after qualifying No. 1 with a track speed record-setting performance of 4.486 sec. at 333.91 mph.
Doug has 20 NHRA event wins in his eight-year career. His career-best elapsed time is 4.420 sec. (NHRA best), and his career-best speed is 335.57 mph (NHRA best). He is currently 5th in championship points (187), just 44 points shy of the lead.
The O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals begins Friday, April 8, for the Top Fuel class with two qualifying sessions. Two more qualifying sessions follow on Saturday. The top sixteen qualified cars will race Sunday in final eliminations.
The O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals is the fourth of 23 national events in the 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
