BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) -- A couple good qualifying runs were sandwiched between a couple runs in which Cory McClenathan lost traction. Nevertheless, McClenathan, in the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products Top Fuel dragster, finished qualifying in the No. 9 position for the 17th running of the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

McClenathan qualifying pass of 4.607 seconds in Saturday's first qualifying session put the California driver firmly in the field. His elapsed time was the quickest of that session.

In tomorrow's opening round of eliminations, McClenathan will square off against No. 8 qualifier Darrell Russell. Russell, from nearby Hockley, Texas, used a pass of 4.592 seconds at 320.66 mph to make the 16-car Top Fuel field.

"We had that one good run today but need to step it up a bit tomorrow to have a chance," said McClenathan. I think that Todd Smith and the guys will be up for the task."

Crew chief Todd Smith joined the team just prior to the Las Vegas race a little over two weeks ago and has made his present felt in the two races he has been at the helm.
