BATON ROUGE, La. - Rookie Federal Mogul Dragster driver Erica Walsh-Credeur will make her competition debut at her home track during this weekend's NHRA Division 4 Federal Mogul Drag Racing series event at State Capitol Dragway near Baton Rouge, La. Not only will the event be the first race for the new team, but will be the first race for new associate sponsor Black Max Downhole Tools.
Walsh-Credeur, from nearby Crowley, La., hopes to gain valuable seat time this weekend, and make a good showing for her new sponsor in front of her hometown fans. Before making the move to FMD this year, Walsh-Credeur, the daughter of former Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Ron Walsh, raced in NHRA's Super Comp class, which has served as a stepping stone for many drivers into the alcohol ranks. Walsh-Credeur looks forward to her new career in NHRA's Pro-Sportsman class.
"I'm just a little nervous that it's my first race at my home track," said Walsh-Credeur. "I'm going to have a lot of family and friends there, so I'm will have to concentrate on keeping my focus this weekend. I just have to get out there and run the race I want to race."
Even with her inexperience to the class, Walsh-Credeur feels the sky is the limit for her new team.
"Obviously, if we went out there and ran a 5.40 [elapsed time], we would be thrilled," commented Walsh-Credeur. "I don't know if the track is quite ready for it, or if we can quite run those kind of numbers yet. Nonetheless, we're going to try to go out there and run with the best of them."
"Our short-term goal is to get seat time and experience," continued Walsh-Credeur. "My long term goal is to win a Division Championship. This year we want to get our feet wet so to speak. Next year, we want to hit it hard and make a run for the Division Championship."
Walsh Motorsports' new sponsor Black Max Downhole tools is excited about their partnership with the new team as well. Black Max is a worldwide leader in the rental and manufacturing of Downhole drilling tools used primarily in the oil and gas related sectors. Black Max manufactures and leases a complete line of drilling tools. Black Max has 23 locations worldwide, with their head office located in Nisku, Alberta, Canada.
Qualifying begins at 4 p.m. Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters, with two more sessions following on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com's Drag Race Central for round by round updates of the racing action from Baton Rouge.
