COMMERCE, Ga. (Sunday May 6) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the PiranaZ Chevrolet S-10, came into today eliminations at the 21st Annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Southern Nationals qualified 13th on the Pro Stock Truck ladder

In the first round Whisnant was paired against Don Smith. Whisnant knowing that Smith had a performance advantage on him knew that he had to be very quick on the tree to pull off a victory. When the light came down the tree Whisnant left early giving the victory to Smith. Smith ran a 7.518 / 180.21 mph to Whisnant's 7.589 / 178.87.

"I took a shot at the old man," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "I knew going into this round that I would have to have a great light to get past Don (Smith) today.

"Those guys have a lot of horsepower right now and I knew we would have to win it on the tree. I took a shot at him and it didn't turn out this time. I saw the red light when I went by. He owes me one now.

"Like my Dad (Reid Whisnant) always says, if you don't red light once in awhile, your not trying hard enough.

"Honestly, I don't feel bad about today. I am really encouraged by how well the truck is running. This new truck reacts so much quicker that my other truck, that you have to try to keep from red lighting.

"We are going to stay here tomorrow and test. We are going to work on a lot of things and try and get ready for Topeka."

The next stop on the Pro Stock Truck schedule will be the 13th Annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Topeka, Kan. May 24-27.
