Atlanta: Whisnant returns to his home racetrack.

COMMERCE, Ga. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Pro Stock Chevrolet Cavalier does not have to go far to attend this weekends 22nd Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. The Stockbridge, Ga. native has been calling the Atlanta Dragway his home racetrack for as long as he can remember.

"Some of my earliest childhood memories are of watching my Dad (Reid Whisnant) race here at the Atlanta Dragway," said Whisnant. "You always want to do well at your home racetrack, to make a good showing in front of the home town crowd. This past week we have worked overtime to try and pickup our performance for the Southern Nationals so we can do just that.

"We want to qualify here in Atlanta, but not just because we have so many family members and friends here this weekend. Our performance level is down. We need to bring our performance up and prove to ourselves, and every one else, that Gainesville was not just a fluke.

"Pro Stock is the most competitive class in POWERade Drag Racing Series. In this class if you get even a little bit behind, you do not race on Sunday. After Gainesville we got turned in the wrong direction, and have not been able to recover. We know that it is time to make wholesale changes on this Cavalier.

"We were pretty disappointed after not qualifying in Bristol. We left Bristol, came straight back to our shop here in Stockbridge, and got to work. We all put our heads together, studied all of our run data and tapes; and then got to work.

"We have pulled some all nighters, and changed lots of things on this Cavalier. Hopefully the changes we made will show on our ET slips. We are anxious to get to the racetrack and see the results of our hard work.

"We really want to make the show on Sunday if for no other reason than to thanks our families for putting up with all the time away from home, late hours, and long days.

Qualifying at the 22nd Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals begins on Friday May 3, and continues on Saturday May 4. Eliminations begin at 11:00 AM EST on Sunday May 5.
