COMMERCE,GA (May 4) - With the first day of qualifying complete at the NHRA Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals, Larry Dixon has qualified the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster in the No. 3 position with a pass of 4.594 seconds at 316.30 mph on Friday night.

As the current points leader, Dixon and Team would be among the last pair of cars to make their first attemptat Atlanta Dragway and would benefit in watching all the other Top Fuel cars test the track. He began the day withthe lowest elapsed time of the round with a pass of 4.653 seconds at 308.99 mph and claimed the early No. 1 qualifying position after the first session.

The second qualifying lap saw Dixon shift over to the left lane to try and maintain his position on the Top Fuel pole. Crew Chief Dick LaHaie tuned his eighth 4.5-second qualifying lap of the season (8 out of 24 totalqualifying laps) with a quick 4.594-second lap at 316.30 mph, however it would not hold as the quickest pass by the end of the session. Kenny Bernstein took over the top spot with a time of 4.521 seconds, while Mike Dunn's 4.583-second lap claimed second place on the ladder.

Dixon is the current Winston Top Fuel points leader with 475 and holds a 16-point lead over second place Mike Dunn. Two qualifying sessions remain on Saturday and are scheduled for Noon and 3:00 pm ET. Qualifying rounds will be televised on ESPN2 from 4:30-6:30 PM ET on Saturday and the finals will air Sunday beginning at 5:00 PM ET.
