COMMERCE, Ga.-Like he did during last weekend's NHRA tour stop in Bristol, Tenn., Bruce Litton made only the evening pass during yesterday's opening sessions of trials at the 21st annual Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals.

He subscribes to the IHRA format of a single run on Friday and two on Saturday. With the NHRA events, Litton, who still is rebuilding from the fire that left his drag-racing operation a heap of ruble, skips one pass as a cost-cutting measure for Indianapolis-based driver.

Last weekend the Indianapolis resident also skipped the first of two passes during the Saturday competition, relying on the evening runs. The game plan worked and, in fact, he reached the Sunday elimination rounds off his Friday sprint of 4.729 seconds and 308.78 mph.

While Litton had to be pleased with the performance of his Wix Filters-sponsored dragster last week, he goes into today's final two trial heats a little concerned.

He car was running off pace halfway down the Atlanta Dragway yesterday and shut it down early, settling for an elapsed time of 5.490 seconds at a paltry 172.21 mph for the quarter-mile in limping into 12th in the qualifying order. There were parts and pieces strewn in his right lane, a signal that something broke in the Littonmobile.
