ANTRON BROWN DRIVES MATCO TOOLS RAIL TO NO. 6 SPOT AT ATLANTA
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 15, 2010) - Antron Brown raced his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to the No. 6 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Atlanta Dragway. Brown, who has two poles this season, has qualified in the top half of the field at six of eight races this season.
The 24-time NHRA winner entered the final day of qualifying for the 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals in the No. 4 qualifying position after racing to an elapsed time of 3.948-seconds on Friday evening. On Saturday's first qualifying effort, the 2008 Atlanta Dragway Top Fuel winner clocked an pass of 3.959 seconds at 304.39 in the heat of the day. That moved Brown to sixth in the 16-car order. The Matco Tools team made another solid pass when Brown powered his Brian Corradi/Mark Oswald-tuned rail to a lap of 3.999 at 299.46 on his final qualifying attempt at the hot Commerce track. Brown finished sixth in the order. Last May, he qualified fifth at the Summit Racing Equipment Souther Nationals. The Matco/Army team has an average qualifying position of 5.75 in eight races in 2010.
"We're really making progress and getting a handle on this DSR Matco Tools dragster," Brown said. "We're working out the kinks of our new in-house DSR chassis and it's really coming around quickly. We made two solid runs today and we're happy. We think we have what it takes to go some rounds on Sunday. We need a good rebound day on race day."
Brown will face off against No. 11 qualifier Pat Dakin in the first round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday at Atlanta Dragway. Brown has never met Dakin during eliminations. The former college track star has 98 career Top Fuel round wins and 11 this season.
