Notes from the first day of qualifying

Angelle gives the CVEC Racing Suzuki an auspicious debut.

Persistent rain showers forced a delay in the completion of the first round of qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac. However, before the rains put a temporary halt to the on-track activities, the Pro Stock Motorcycles did complete their session, with Angelle Savoie making quite a statement with the quickest and fastest run of the day.

Debuting the colors of new sponsor CVEC Racing, Angelle rocketed down the Atlanta Dragway quarter-mile in 7.240 seconds with a top speed of 189.76 mph, thus claiming the provisional No.1 qualifying position.

"Today felt like Christmas, because this morning I got brand new leathers, uniforms, shoes and helmet. The only things that weren't completely new were the paint job from Houston and my gloves.

"I didn't think we'd get a run in today, so to make that pass with our sponsors here to see it gave me a little redemption. We may not have won the race yet, but so far we're the No. 1 qualifier, which we weren't able to do when they came to Houston.

"The run felt really good. I think we have a little bit more in the sixty-foot time. George (team owner and crew chief Bryce) will be tuning on the clutch, getting it better and better, and my shifting was improved from the last race. The CVEC Suzuki went perfectly straight, and I didn't really feel the crosswind. Everything just worked really well.

"I believe we'll be able to pick it up in the front half, because we had a great mile per hour. I'm sure there's a lot left in it, especially considering the conditions. When the weather tunes up, we'll tune up."
