BROWN LANDS IN FIFTH STARTING POSITON FOR NHRA SPRING NATIONALS
BAYTOWN, TEXAS, April 30, 2011 – Piloting his Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster, Antron Brown nailed the fifth starting spot here Saturday during final qualifying for the 24th annual NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway.
Brown’s 3.873-second trip at 315.78 miles per hour during the second session on Friday placed him in the top half of the field for the fourth time in five races this season.
His qualifying effort earned him a first round date with 12th-place qualifier, Doug Foley, beginning at 11 a.m. CDT. It will be their first meeting of the year.
“We’re through with qualifying and now it’s on to race day,” said Brown. “The track was a bit challenging both Friday and Saturday. It was especially tough today given the humid conditions. We’ll just have to deal with whatever is thrown at us tomorrow.”
On Sunday, Brown will be shooting for his second win of the year. He claimed the Las Vegas event earlier this month.
“The Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster is running strong,” said Brown. “I’m sure we’ll be ready to roll once the gun sounds tomorrow.”
Holding third in the standings coming into the fifth round of the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season, Brown would like to rise up and challenge the two drivers in front of him – Del Worsham and Larry Dixon, respectively.
“We need to put the pressure on them,” he said. “If we can have a good outing tomorrow, they’ll certainly be feeling our presence.”
