Antron Brown To Start From Fifth Position In NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals
Antron Brown, behind the wheel of the Aaron’s Dream Machine/Matco Tools dragster, will come out of the fifth starting spot here Sunday in the 11th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.
After recording a 3.864-second pass at 317.12 miles per hour on Friday, Brown pocketed his sixth top-five qualifying effort of the year.
“It was a good qualifying outing for this Aaron’s/Matco Tools dragster here at Don Schumacher Racing,” said Brown. “We made two really good runs on Friday and got five bonus points, which our team really needs. Those qualifying points can add up quickly.
“We just missed today’s first run and then had that mechanical problem (broken throttle cable) on the last run. But, it’s all good. We’ll rebound and come back strong on race day while looking to go some rounds at Bristol.”
Brown will take on 12th-place-qualifier Bob Vandergriff in the first round of final eliminations starting at noon ET. It will be their first meeting of the season.
“Bob is a good driver and he has a very capable team,” said the New Jersey native. “We can’t look past those guys or else we’ll be saying goodbye to Thunder Valley really fast.
“I’m so impressed with the quality of the teams in the Top Fuel class this year. I think it has been proven time and time again that anyone can win these races from anywhere in the field.”
After two consecutive quarterfinal-round losses, Brown is set to work late on Sunday while making a move up in the standings (he landed in Bristol holding fifth-place behind DSR teammate, Tony Schumacher).
“We need to get back to business,” he said. “This is only the ninth race of the year, but you don’t want to wait too long before turning up the wick. We want to get to as many finals and get as many wins as possible as we get closer to the Countdown to 1.”
