Ryan Truex, 17-year old brother of NASCAR ace Martin Truex Jr., scored
the biggest victory of his brief career, a last-lap win in the Tioga
Downs 125 at Watkins Glen Saturday afternoon. The race was the fifth of
the NASCAR Camping World Series East season.
In a green-white-checker finish, young Truex bumped his way past
sports-car ace and leader Patrick Long two-turns from the finish line
to score the win. The winner drove the NAPA Toyota fielded by Michael
Waltrip Racing.
"We were better than him (Long), and I got a good run in the carousel,"
Truex said. "I saw a hole, ducked in and sort of bumped into him, which
was okay I guess."
Truex becomes the third family member to win in the CWSE. Martin Truex
Sr. and Jr. previously won series races. And his family became the
second pair of brothers to win in the series history.
Asked if he obtained guidance from his older brother, the teenager said.
"Martin told me to be careful with my shifting points and to be patient.
And that if I could keep my car in one piece, I could win it."
And he did just that in his first-ever road-course race.
Matt Kobyluck took second in a Chevrolet and 16-year old Brett Moffitt
grabbed third place in a Chevrolet.
Long, who dominated much of the race, ended up fourth in his third
stock-car race. He drove a Chevrolet.
"There wasn't a half-car width available in the corner, and he steamed
it in there," Long said. "I thought we would go two-by-two through
there, but he didn't want that. Green-white-checkered finishes promote
that kind of racing, and I feel the race was stolen from me."
Fifth place went to fast-qualifier and teenager Matt deBenedetto in a
Toyota.
