Eurosport kicks off birthday celebrations with "20th Anniversary Special"
Champions past and present share greatest sporting moments
exclusively on Eurosport
Online and on-air initiatives to uncover sport's "Super Fan"
Paris - To celebrate two decades of groundbreaking sports
broadcasting, Eurosport has created an exciting "20th Anniversary
Special" that will be featured across its entire media platform, from 16
to 25 May.
On-air, some of the world's most renowned champions talk exclusively
about their greatest memories from 20 years of Eurosport broadcasting.
The 10-day celebration will also see legends from Football to Formula One
wish Eurosport 'Happy Birthday' in a series of over 50 festive messages.
Online, a special take-over across Eurosport's network of websites will
complement exclusive editorial content surrounding the anniversary. In
addition, in honour of sports fans across Europe, a specially designed
microsite will feature a "Search for Super Fan" contest, with the winner
enjoying a superb trip for two to New York and the US Open.
Star-studded line-up
Usain Bolt, Valentino Rossi, Alain Prost, Mike Powell, Miguel Indurain,
Ole Einar Bjorndalen and Jonah Lomu are just a handful of the stars to
have accepted Eurosport's invitation to look back over the past 20 years.
In a series of three-minute programmes, stars will relive special
moments, focusing on a specific year. That's one year one star, with 20
years packed into 20 programmes between 16 and 25 May. All these
programmes will be brought together in a one-hour special to be broadcast
on 20 May at 20:00 (CET).
No birthday celebration is complete without best wishes - which is
what stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewis Hamilton, Serena Williams,
Andy Murray, Alain Bernard or Evgeny Platov, will do with their "Happy
Birthday Eurosport" short clips.
The 10-day party will end in style on 25 May at 20:15 (CET) as the 20th
anniversary candles are blown out by champions and Eurosport staff during
Mats Wilander's popular LIVE show "Game, Sets & Mats".
In 20 years, Eurosport has built excellent relationships with athletes,
which explains why so many are happy to celebrate with us. In the words
of figure-skating legend Evgeny Platov: "I'm delighted to be part of
Eurosport's history. I grew up with you."
Search for Super Fan
Where would Eurosport be without the fans - those people who make the
many sporting events we broadcast so special?
To celebrate Eurosport's 20th anniversary and in recognition of these
unsung heroes, Eurosport is launching a major new pan-European online
competition to uncover the ultimate sports fan. The lucky winner will
enjoy a trip for two to New York to attend the US Open, one of the
greatest grand slam tennis tournaments in the world.
Fans can visit Eurosport's 20th anniversary website at
www.20years.eurosport.com from 2 May through to 14 June and complete the
"Search for Super Fan" quiz. Fans will also be asked to tell Eurosport
why they or someone they know deserves to be crowned the "Super Fan". The
20th anniversary microsite will also run Europe-wide polls and other
exciting competitions during 2009.
