SCHUMACHER CLOSES IN ON WORLD TITLE WITH 14TH WIN
RICHMOND, Va., October 12 - U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot Tony "The Sarge"
Schumacher closed in on the 2008 NHRA POWERade world championship here Sunday
following his 14th victory of the season in the Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports
Park.
After his final round win over Hillary Will, Schumacher will only have to qualify
for the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at the end of the month to clinch his fifth straight
crown and the sixth of his career.
"That's great news," said the Chicago-area resident. "This truly has been a
storybook season for the U.S. Army team. We're really looking forward to getting out to
Vegas over Halloween weekend."
En route to his meeting with Will, Schumacher took out the likes of Scott Palmer,
Antron Brown and Morgan Lucas. It was his first career win at VMP.
"None of those races were easy by any means," he said. "In fact, we've had close
races throughout the season. While our overall statistics may look impressive, we have
not dominated like in years past. The fans have gotten a great show this year."
Having already set a plethora of NHRA records in '08, Schumacher can now set
his sights on recording the most victories in a single season in any pro class. Pro Stock
driver Greg Anderson had 15 victories in 2004.
"Like I said, this has been a dream season," said Schumacher. "I feel extremely
blessed that I've been able to be a part of the greatest team that's ever been assembled in
the sport. You don't get opportunities like this very often, so you have to enjoy the ride
while it lasts."
Once Schumacher pockets his sixth career championship, Schumacher will pass
Joe Amato on the list for the most Top Fuel career crowns.
"Just incredible," he offered. "Again, I wouldn't be in the position I'm in if it
wasn't for Alan Johnson (his crew chief) and my team. They're just like our Soldiers in
that they never accept defeat."
