FONTANA, Calif. (April 27, 2001) -- In just his second Winston West outing, Jon Wood qualified his Auto Concierge Ford Taurus on the outside pole. Wood was the last driver to attempt his qualifying run for Saturday's 200-mile race.

"I really wanted to sit on the pole and I knew we had a shot at it," stated Wood following his qualifying run. "I guess if we couldn't sit on the pole then the outside pole is the second best place to be."

Wood also posted the fastest time in the Winston West afternoon practice following qualifying.

"We have a great car for this weekend's race and I really believe we have a shot at winning," stated Wood. "Our main goal for this weekend is to be competitive. I'm gaining seat time at some of the bigger tracks on the circuit. Climbing through the NASCAR ranks is very similar to attending college. I'm working my way through the prerequisites so I can move into the 'big leagues'. After running California Speedway this weekend I'll be qualified to run on all of the NASCAR sanctioned tracks."

Wood's first Winston West outing at Phoenix International Raceway yielded a 4th place qualifying effort and an 11th place finish.
