Scott Gaylord and the Oliver team got their Monte Carlo back up front leading the most laps in the NAPA 200 at Rocky Mountain Raceway on Saturday night and remains 4th in the championship points battle.
The car was pretty good right off the trailer but not quite as good as last year. We were good, but didn't think we had a chance at the pole like last year, but the 3rd place qualifying put is in a good position for the start of the race.
At the start of the race the temp was in the high 70's and clear, perfect for the fans and good weather for a race. The race itself was unfolding pretty well while we were running in the 3rd position untill passing into the second postion. When a caution came out at lap 68 and the leader pitted with most of the other lead lap cars, we opted to remain on the race track and collect the 5 bonus points for lead lap.
Scott lead the next 98 laps fo the race, giving us the 5 bonus points for leading the most laps of the race."We were hoping for the race to remain green untill the end." Scott said, "We would have stayed out but with the yellow flag, and several cars blowing right fronts a few laps earlier along with the tight fuel situation, we decided to go conservative come in get fuel and make sure we had a good finish for our climb in the championship points run."
At the re-start with only about 20 to go there just was not enough time to get the car rolling the way it was prior to our pit stop, the new right side tires were not as good as the first set. We went back out of the pits in 5th place and remained there untill the checkered flag fell.
The Oliver crew did and excellent job working together, getting us out of the pits first and helped us get our 4th top five finish this year for the Oliver Gravity Separators/ Denver Seminary Chevrolet.
Looking forward to the next race in Roseburg, OR where last year we also sat on the pole!
