WWS: Bonus program winners announced

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 15, 2003) - Fifteen drivers of the NASCAR Grand National Division, Winston West Series will share a combined $50,000 from the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., as prize money for the second leg of the 2003 schedule.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 15, 2003) - Fifteen drivers of the NASCAR Grand National Division, Winston West Series will share a combined $50,000 from the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., as prize money for the second leg of the 2003 schedule. The prize money will be presented to the drivers on Sunday, Oct. 19, prior to the start of the Lucas Oil 150 at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.

Scott Lynch (No. 08 Yerf-Dog/The Orleans Dodge) will receive $10,000 for accumulating the most points in the seventh through the 11th races. The 23-year-old series rookie from Burley, Idaho, scored three victories, along with a top-five finish and a top-10 finish, to net 848 points.

Steve Portenga (No. 77 King Taco Ford) will take home $6,000. A former Sparks, Nev., resident who now calls Bakersfield home - Portenga accumulated 790 points during the five-race span. He coupled two runner-up finishes with a top-five finish and two top-10 finishes.

Mike Duncan (No. 9 Lucas Oil Chevrolet) will receive $4,000. The 41-year-old Lamont, Calif., competitor also totaled 790 points for the five events - with two podium finishes and three consecutive 6th-place finishes.

Based on the 762 points he accumulated during the five-race stretch, Austin Cameron (No. 16 NAPA/NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet) will receive $3,750. The El Cajon, Calif., competitor missed four races earlier this year after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. He has scored two wins since returning to competition in July.

Kevin Richards (No. 85 Monaco Enterprises/Jerry Springer Chevrolet) of Spokane, Wash., will receive $3,500. Richards tallied 750 points during the five races - with two top-five finishes, along with two top-10 finishes.

Brett Thompson (No. 61 Rich Thompson Trucking Chevrolet) of Jerome, Idaho, had 715 points and will receive $3,250. Series veteran Scott Gaylord (No. 00 Oliver Gravity Separators/Denver Seminary Chevrolet) of Lakewood, Colo., had 712 points and will receive $3,000. Mark Reed (No. 3 Royal Bath & Body Products Pontiac) of Bakersfield, Calif., had 687 points and will receive $2,750. Tim Woods III (No. 54 Chino Hills Ford/VOKAL Ford) of Chino Hills, Calif.,had 669 points and will receive $2,500. Jim Inglebright (No. 20 Jelly Belly/NAPA Chevrolet) of Fairfield, Calif., had 664 points and will receive $2,250.

Five other drivers who will also be receiving checks are Johnny Borneman of Ramona, Calif., with 643 points and $2,000; Gene Woods of Ontario, Calif., with 639 points and $1,900; Mike David of Modesto, Calif., with 577 points and $1,800; Jeff Davis of Anaheim, Calif., with 551 points and $1,700; and Bobby Hillis of Phoenix, Ariz., with 548 points and $1,600.

This is the sixth consecutive year that teams in the Winston West Series are being rewarded for their performance through this program. The prize money is part of the $350,000 point fund award from R.J. Reynolds Co.'s Winston brand. The bulk of the overall point fund will be distributed at the end of the season, based on the final championship standings.
