Pursley sets record

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Greg Pursley spent most of practice making sure his car was right for the long runs that are sure to mark Thursday night's Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150 presented by Shamrock Farms.

He didn't expect a great qualifying run. But what he got out of his No. 26 Gene Price Motorsports/Star Nursery Chevrolet was a record run at Phoenix International Raceway and captured his first Coors Light Pole Award.

Pursley's lap of 27.784 seconds/129.571 mph was good enough to knock NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Gilliland off the pole, and break the nine-year old record set by Steve Portenga. Portenga, now a crew chief for NASCAR Camping World Series West rookie driver Blake Koch, had held the record 27.822 seconds/129.394.

Gilliland (No. 89 Northeastern University Toyota) wound up second in qualifying at 27.892/129.069. David Mayhew, who had paced both practice sessions, was third in qualifying at 27.901/129.028.

Jason Bowles and Steve Park were fourth and fifth, respectively. Park, who is running a full NASCAR Camping World Series East schedule for the second year in a row, is making his first West race appearance.

The Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150 presented by Shamrock Farms is scheduled to take the green flag at 7:15 p.m.
