Former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Crew Member to Sing National Anthem
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (October 28, 2008) -- Mike Powell is no stranger to Victory Lane at the Rockingham Speedway. He was a part of the 1989 Championship winning pit crew with Hendrick Motorsports during the Unocal Pit Crew Competition with the No. 17 Tide Team with driver Darrell Waltrip that was held at the Speedway.
This Saturday, Mike will kick off the opening ceremonies of the Black's Tire American 200 by singing the National Anthem at the historic one-mile oval located just outside of the city of Rockingham.
Mike, a crew member of the 1996 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship team with Hendrick Motorsports, has been involved in stock car racing for over 25 years and has also sang the National Anthem before NASCAR Sprint Cup races at Daytona, Atlanta, Richmond, North Wilksboro, Michigan and many others. He also sang God Bless The USA before the start of the 1991 Daytona 500.
"I am excited that [Speedway President] Andy [Hillenburg] asked me to sing the National Anthem this weekend," said Mike. "I have many great memories of the Rockingham Speedway and I am honored to help bring it back to prominence in racing."
The Black's Tire American 200 is the final race of the 2008 Hooters Pro Cup Series and will determine the season champion. Benny Gordon, Mark McFarland and Jay Fogleman will be battling it out in the 200 lap race to determine who will take home the honors.
