Weather Washes Qualifying for Southwest Series Event, Defending Champ Pettit on the Pole

PHOENIX, ARIZ. (January 29, 2005) Weather scored the first victory of 2005 as inclement weather washed out practice and qualifying for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series at Phoenix International Raceway Saturday afternoon. Continued showers and a forecast for the same forced officials from NASCAR and Phoenix International Raceway to postpone the remainder of the Saturday NASCAR schedule of events until Sunday.

Since qualifying has been cancelled due to inclement weather, the starting lineup for the Southwest Series event will be set per the NASCAR rulebook. By virtue of the rulebook rain lineup, defending series champion Jim Pettit II of Prunedale, Calif. will start the 75-lap Copper World Classic event from the pole position. Joining Pettit on the front row will be three-time PIR race winner Eddy McKean.

All forty-three entries will start the Copper World Classic race which is scheduled to take the green flag at 1:15 pm Sunday.
