BAKERSFIELD, California (June 24, 2003) - The upcoming Firecracker 150 at Mesa Marin Raceway will be more than just another NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series race for Brandon Whitt and Clean Line Motorsports. It marks the second Southwest Series race at the Bakersfield, Calif. track this season, and driver and team are hopeful that the laps turned earlier this year will give them a needed boost after a difficult first half.
Brandon ran a strong race in the March event, battling to the top five before the No. 28 McMillin Homes/Simpson GS3 Pontiac blew its motor at the race's three-quarter mark. Together with a Craftsman Truck Series race run the same weekend, Brandon's early-season start gave the young driver invaluable experience and insight that will help him with this weekend's event.
Brandon knows, though, that even with the benefit of his early-season experience it will still be a hard-fought race at Mesa Marin this weekend. "We ran good in the first race," Brandon says, "but the weather will be a lot warmer this Saturday than it was in March, so we'll have to adjust to the track conditions. A lot will depend on the condition of the track surface. It will definitely be interesting."
As he prepares for his Saturday night start at Bakersfield, Brandon would like to thank his fans and his fellow competitors for their concern for his well-being after last weekend's event. "A lot of people came up to make sure I was okay," continues Brandon. "I really appreciate their concern for me. We race hard on the track but when something like this happens everyone pulls together."
Prior to the Firecracker 150, Brandon's sponsor McMillin Homes will host a major hospitality event on the speedway grounds. Brandon and the Clean Line team will be on hand to meet and greet fans and McMillin employees and sign autographs.
Brandon then will jump back into the hotly-contested Southwest Series championship chase Saturday night under the lights on Mesa Marin's high banks. The Firecracker 150 will get underway at 7:00PM, with tickets still available at the Mesa Marin ticket office.
