Southwest Series Prepares to Heat Up Altamont

Altamont Motorsports Park first opened its doors on July 2, 1966 and on their 40th anniversary they will host the AutoZone NASCAR Southwest Series' fourth race of the season. The series has had three different winners including Matt Crafton and Auggie Vidovich with many rookie and veteran drivers battling for the championship this year.

With three different winners thus far and a field of strong teams, this year's points race is heating up. Currently number one in points, Eric Holmes' great finish in Colorado solidified his 30 point lead over the competition. Tied for second are Rip Michels and Southwest veteran Eddy McKean. Rip Michels Stock Building Supply car is looking forward to the upcoming race. Michels said he "likes the bigger, faster tracks" and since "most drivers have never been there before everybody will be on equal ground."

The race for Rookie-of-the-Year is also tight. One of the top competitors, Cody Pruitt is gearing up for Altamont. Although Pruitt has never raced at Altamont he plans "to turn his season around by getting in the show and finishing in the top 5." Pruitt has had some challenges this season but says that "every race in a learning experience" and the team continues to progress.

With so many different drivers and teams fighting for the final Southwest Series Championship and the lack of experience on this track, Altamont looks to be a great showdown of teams and drivers.
