Tony Green jumps into early lead in NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge - Sunbelt Region.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 22, 2002) - Tony Green of Oak Hills, Calif., has taken the early lead this season in the Sunbelt Region of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge.

Green's early dominance in the Super Late Model division at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway, where he has won three of the first six races this season, has propelled him into the top spot with a Competition Performance Index of .8333. The index is used to rank the track leaders in each of the eight regions across the country. In addition to the three victories, Green has five top-five finishes.

Scott Winters of Tracy, Calif., is ranked second in the region this week. Winters has one win and three top-five finishes in three races in the Grand American division at Madera (Calif.) Speedway. Third in the Sunbelt Region is Dennis Reno Jr. of Tarrant, Ala. He has won three of four races this season on the .625-mile paved oval of Birmingham (Ala.) International Raceway.

Chuck Wares, who notched his fourth win Saturday night, is fourth in this week's standings. In addition to the four wins, Wares has five top-five finishes in six races competing in the Super Late Model division in his hometown at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park. Fifth in the regional rankings is Bobby Scott Jr. of Santa Cruz, Calif. Scott, who is defending his championship in the G.A. Modified division at Watsonville (Calif.) Speedway, has two wins, five top fives and six top-10 finishes in six races this season on the .25-mile clay oval.

Completing the top 10 in the Sunbelt Region are Gary Tamborelli of Escondido, Calif., Orange Show Speedway, San Bernardino, Calif.; Scott Gafforini of Las Vegas, Las Vegas Motor Speedway; Mike Balzer of San Antonio, San Antonio Speedway; Gene Fife of Tehachapi, Calif., Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.; and Danny Gay of Lakeside, Calif., Cajon Speedway near San Diego.

NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge regional championship standings are determined by the Competition Performance Index (CPI), a statistical formula that ranks each feature division driver based on a combination of starts, wins, top-five finishes, top-10 finishes and car counts in their respective divisions.

* Six different drivers have visited victory lane in six races this year in the Late Model Stock division at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.

ON THE RIGHT TRACK:
* In addition to winning three of the first four races so far this season at Birmingham International Raceway, Dennis Reno Jr. has finished in the top five in all four events.

* On May 21, 1988, 24-year-old Bobby Labonte launched his NASCAR racing career with a 50-lap feature win at Concord (N.C.) Motorsport Park. The win came one day before his older brother, Terry, took a $200,000 victory in The Winston at Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte. 1988 saw Bobby Labonte racing Late Model Stock Cars at Concord and Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Speedways, in his first full season in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge.
