NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Southampton Motor Speedway
Update - All Events Canceled For This Weekend
Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003
CAPRON, Va. (Sept. 20) - Due to the widespread power outage left in the wake of Hurricane Isabel, all events at Southampton Motor Speedway have been called off for this weekend. This includes the program that had been planned for Friday, Sept. 19, and the makeup event that had been slated for Sunday, Sept. 21.
On a personal note (and this release IS going to be much more informal than one of my regular ones), I drove up to the track on Friday afternoon and was pleased to see that SMS was remarkably unscathed. Of course, most of the billboards had been blown down, several panels from the sign by the road had been blown out and there was minor damage to the sign-in booth at the back gate. Other than those few things, there was no evident damage.
The track and the walls all held up well. The office took a very minimal hit -- no broken windows, only a few loose shingles. There was no evidence that I could see that the roof had been compromised in any way. The lights and poles, restrooms and grandstands all seem to have made it through the storm OK.
Of course, the big concern (for us and everyone in the area) is the lack of power and when it will be restored. At this time, I don't have any news to report on that front.
Until the power returns, SMS General Manager Brad Skelding is not prepared to announce any upcoming events at the track.
For the most up-to-date status reports, fans may call the track number -- (434) 658-RACE. The answering machine function of our phone system was/is not affected by the power outage.
