CAPRON, Va. (May 7) - After three straight rainouts and a planned break for last weekend's Winston Cup and Busch Series events at Richmond, Southampton Motor Speedway will resume its 2003 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series schedule this Friday, May 9, with Perry Auto Group Night at the Races.
Pit gates open at 3 p.m. Front gates open and practice begins at 4:30. Time trials get under way at 6:40 and the first race goes green at 8.
Friday's feature lineup includes: RaceWorld.com Late Model Stock Cars (100 laps); Mike Duman Auto Sales Limited Late Models (50 laps); Rick's Rock Cafe Pure Stocks (25 laps); Ukrop's Mid-Atlantic Champ Karts (20 laps); and, HillCo Building Maintenance Super Fours (25 laps).
Tickets are $12 for adults and $4 for youths (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Active-duty military (with ID), senior citizens (65+) and teens (13-19) receive a $2 discount off the adult admission price.
SMS is pleased to announce the signing of HillCo Inc. of Chesapeake, Va., as the new title sponsor of the "HillCo Building Maintenance Super Four" division - the track's unique combination of Mini Stocks and Mini Trucks.
In addition to sponsoring the Super Fours, HillCo is also posting the "HillCo Pavement Markings Pole Award" for the INEX Little Race Cars Legends class. Legends drivers will get their first shot at the $25 bonus on Friday, May 16.
Continuing on the sponsorship front, the South Hampton Roads Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots campaign was recently announced as the title sponsor of the Scale Racing League's "Mid-Atlantic Toys For Tots Pro Cup Challenge" - a 10-race series for half-scale Arena-Cup cars. SMS will host five of the 10 races, starting on Friday, May 16.
At each event, fans who donate a new, unwrapped toy will get a raffle ticket for a door prize drawing during the event. Also, throughout the summer, raffle tickets will be sold for a new Arena-Cup car, valued at over $9,300.
As if all that weren't enough, fans can also look forward to a flyover by a CH-46 Marine helicopter at every Scale Racing League event.
In addition to May 16, other Southampton dates for the SRL Mid-Atlantic Toys For Tots Pro Cup Challenge are: May 30, June 13, July 18 and Aug. 8.
The Virginia Mini-Cup Racing Association, rained out at SMS on April 18, has been added to the schedule on Friday, July 11. The Mini-Cuppers are also slated to appear at Southampton on June 20 and Sept. 19.
While the weather has halted on-track activities for the last few weeks, things have been bustling online at SMS's Web site - www.SouthamptonMotorSpeedway.com.
A new "Sponsor Links" page has been added, providing fans with a convenient avenue to connect to many of the companies and organizations who participate in weekly racing at SMS.
Also added recently is the new "SMS Family Fun Pages" section. The debut installment, which is designed to be printed out, features a picture for young fans (or those who are just "young at heart") to color, a coupon for the SMS Souvenir Trailer (good for 10% off purchases of $20 or more) and a WordSearch puzzle.
As a bonus, one WordSearch aficionado will get to ride in the SMS pace car during this Friday's Limited Late Model race!
Just complete your puzzle, write the requested info on the back of the page and drop it in the specially-marked box at the Souvenir Trailer on Friday evening. From among all the correct entries, one lucky WordSearcher will be chosen to ride shotgun with pace car driver Dave Watkins.
In its fourth season under the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series banner, Southampton Motor Speedway is a 4/10-mile, paved tri-oval, similar in configuration to Richmond International Raceway. The track is located on U.S. Highway 58, one mile west of Capron and 17 miles east of I-95 (Emporia exit).
To learn more about SMS and its schedule of upcoming events, fans may call the Speedway office at (434) 658-RACE or visit the track's web site at www.SouthamptonMotorSpeedway.com.
