BURT MYERS WINS BUD POLE AWARD FRIDAY NIGHT FOR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS 199 SATURDAY NIGHT AT BOWMAN GRAY STADIUM
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Aug. 4, 2006) -- It was like dejà vu all over again on Friday night at Bowman Gray Stadium for NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour driver Burt Myers who won the pole position for the Advance Auto Parts 199 on Saturday night at the legendary short track. Myers circled the quarter-mile oval at a speed of 65.189 mph to edge fellow Whelen Southern Modified Tour driver Tim Brown who posted a lap at 64.748 mph.
Rounding out the top-five qualifiers were Bobby Hutchens who is coming off a recent Modified win at Bowman Gray, followed by Lee Jeffreys and L.W. Miller.
For Myers, his two qualifying laps marked a good start to the weekend as he started -- and won -- last year's Whelen Southern Modified Tour race at Bowman Gray after starting from the pole.
"We're halfway to our goal for the weekend but to finish off that goal we're going to have to win on Saturday night because that's what it's all about," Myers said after collecting the $200 Bud Pole Award. "The car was really hooked up in practice and it was just as good in qualifying. I hope we can pull this race off two years in-a-row because a victory in this race means a lot to me."
After Whelen Southern Modified qualifying, the pole winner -- of course Myers in this care -- gets to draw a 6, 8 or 10 pill. Then the number of driver picks that is pulled redraws their starting position. The redraw on Friday night was an 8 which put Lee Jeffreys on the pole for the start of Saturday night's race, followed by the top eight of L.W. Miller, Jason Myers and Burt Myers, Bobby Hutchens in fifth, with the top eight rounded out by Brian Pack, Junior Miller and Tim Brown.
