1997 REVIEW: Jefferson, Ga.'s Scott Sutherland picked up his second career win in last year's race. Hal Goodson finished second ahead of Raleigh area drivers Dan Matthews and Derrick Gilchrist while Mike Harmon rounded out the top five. Nine cars finished on the lead lap and Steven Christian earned the Bud Pole Award for the event.
NOTES OF INTEREST: * While Scott Sutherland no longer competes on the series, Toby Porter has returned to the series and will be the only driver to have a chance at repeating as a Southern National race winner.
* After five races the point standings feature a blend of experience and youthful exuberance. Veteran late model campaigner Freddie Query heads up the list with Steven Christian and David Reutimann, 1996 and 1997 Rookies of the Year respectively, tied for second. Trailing them is yet another seasoned driver, Billy Bigley, Jr., while third year driver Derrick Gilchrist rounds out the top five.
STAT OF THE WEEK: After five events, encompassing a total of 801 laps, only one driver has completed all of the laps run. Zephyrhills, Fla.'s David Reutimann, the 1997 Slim Jim All Pro Series Rookie of the Year, has been running on the lead lap at the end of each 1998 event. Reutimann now resides in a tie for second place in the series point standings with Steven Christian, just 73 points behind leader Freddie Query. While Reutimann has completed every lap, he has not lead a lap so far in 1998.
