Anderson is Super Sub in Domino's Pizza 200 Greenville, SC - May 10, 1997 - Subbing for his son Wayne, who was making his NASCAR Busch North Series-Grand National Division debut at Loudon, NH, Dick Anderson stormed through the 32 car field to earn his first ever NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series victory in the $43,200 Domino's Pizza 200 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Saturday night. "This is the first race I've ever run at Greenville-Pickens Speedway and the crew worked very hard to get the car set up for me today," the elder Anderson quipped in victory lane, adding, "I was worried towards the end of the race, after seeing most of the rest of the drivers pitting, that my tires would give up in a hurry but they never did and here we are in victory lane." D. Anderson started the car from the 30th position, per NASCAR rules, even though W. Anderson posted a qualifying effort that would have been good enough for a 12th position start if he had been able to make the race. "Before the race started I really felt like I would pull in after 10 or 20 laps, I didn't want to use up Wayne's equipment since he is running for points in the series and I'm not," D. Anderson continued, "but after I passed a few cars, and clicked off a few more laps, I felt like we had a shot at a good finish. By the time I got to third I felt like we had a real good chance of winning the race," he added. "I'm glad to be able to help Wayne and his team out and it's great that he and his sponsor, Porter Cable Power Tools, were able to get a shot at the Busch North Series," he concluded. W. Anderson started 37th and wound up 16th, on the lead lap, in his Busch North Series debut. The race was originally scheduled for April 26, and practice and qualifying was accomplished on that date. As a result, the field was set two weeks ago, and when the 32 qualifiers returned this weekend, Raleigh, NC's Derrick Gilchrist led the field to the green flag after winning his first ever Busch Pole Award at the wheel of his Fairfield Inns Chevrolet. Gilchrist's qualifying time and speed, 19.637 seconds and 91.664 mph, bested the effort of outside front row starter Jeff Fultz. At the drop of the green flag Fultz got a great start and squarely placed his mount out front, pacing the first 97 laps, holding off Gilchrist until nearly the race's halfway point. The early laps saw the caution displayed several times for minor incidents, which resulted in the field being bunched for subsequent restarts, and enabling D. Anderson to pass cars without having to run them down during long green flag runs. By lap 27, when the race's fourth caution was displayed, he had already moved the Porter Cable Power Tools Chevrolet into the 15th position. Just before one fourth of the race had been completed he cracked the top 10 and had set his sites on Steven Christian in the BellSouth Chevrolet, getting by him and moving into the sixth position on lap 61. D. Anderson and Ron Young made contact between turns one and two on lap 72, while the two fought for the fifth position. Young backed into the wall, bringing out the race's sixth caution, but was able to continue and remained on the lead lap. Now solidly in the top five, D. Anderson's rifling through the field was slowed slightly as he was forced to work a little harder to get by series points leader Nipper Alsup, who he disposed of on lap 79, then two laps later also maneuvering by former series champion Hal Goodson. On lap 85 the race's most serious incident occurred on the backstretch when Mike Harmon and Ricky Sanders made contact, sending Sanders spinning. Also collected in the incident were Port City Racing Rookie candidates Carl Long, John Covan and Bobby Hamilton, Jr. All of the drivers were unable to continue, with Sanders making a trip to a local hospital to have an injured leg examined. He was treated and released after being diagnosed with deep bruises to his appendage. As a result of this incident, the race was red flagged for 15 minutes to enable the track cleanup crew to perform the extended cleanup. Prior to green flag racing resuming on lap 94 Harmon was penalized two laps for triggering the prior pileup and D. Anderson went back to work, overtaking polesitter Gilchrist for second then powering by racelong leader Fultz on lap 98, never relinquishing the top spot for the remainder of the event. The balance of the event was punctuated by only two cautions, with D. Anderson pulling away to a healthy lead after each slow-go period. D. Anderson outlasted a solid recovery by Young, who wound up second, with Christian in third, local standout and top finishing Port City Racing Rookie candidate Randy Gentry in fourth and Raleigh, NC's Steve Mendenhall completing the top five. Rounding out the top 10 was Goodson, who was the only other driver besides D. Anderson to go the distance on one set of tires, David Reutimann, Larry Raines, Fultz and Conrad Burr. D. Anderson earned $7,875 in race purse and contingency funds for the win. After the completion of the Domino's Pizza 200, points leader Alsup holds on to a precarious 10 point lead over Goodson who is a mere 17 points ahead of Fultz. Gilchrist is five points back from Fultz while Harmon rounds out the top five with 543 points, just six points behind Gilchrist, and only 32 points behind leader Alsup. Reutimann continues to lead the Port City Racing Rookie competition, with Mendenhall narrowing the gap to four points after notching his first top five finish of the season. Shane Wilson and Jimmy King, Alsup and Fultz's respective crew chiefs have been joined at the top of the points standings of the Jasper Engines & Transmissions Crew Chief Challenge by Ron Young's head wrench, Larry Rapp. The three are tied with 14 points while four others are only four points back with 10 points each. The next race for the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series drivers is the Owens Corning 250 at Salem Speedway in Salem, IN on Sunday afternoon, May 18.
