Donny Lia OK After Hard Crash in SK Modified At Stafford
Practice Crash Leaves Lia Shaken, But Otherwise Just Fine
HUNTINGTON, NY (May 10, 2005) -- NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver Donny Lia was involved in a scary crash on Friday night at Stafford Motor Speedway (CT) while practicing for the night's NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified race. Lia was practicing when he made contact with another car as it was leaving the pits. His #47 Wisk/Clorox SK Mod briefly became airborne before hitting the turn one wall flush with the driver's side door. Lia was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
"I'm totally fine," said Lia. "I just bruised my right knee a little from hitting the steering column. It's gotten much better in the last two days and it looks like it'll be fine in a day or so. All of the safety equipment worked great. If not for hitting my knee, I wouldn't be sore at all.
"It did a lot of damage to the car. It hit at a bad angle because there is the ramp going into the pits, so the wall opens up there. The crew took the car apart Friday night and it was on the jig at Chassis Dynamics on Saturday, where they determined it was unfixable. So Saturday and Sunday was spent making some changes to a new chassis that was done and sitting there. Rob Chowansky painted the body for the new car Sunday. Today the car is at the powder-coater and it should be ready for assembly tonight. We could save nothing but wiring, gauges, a few nerf-bars on right side and the roof from the old car."
Lia and the #47 team will be back at Stafford on Friday.
