KIRCHNER BUMP NETS WIN FOR CARLSON
by David W. Morgan

(West Salem August 12, 2000) - La Crosse's Brent Kirchner may not have won the feature on Saturday night, but he did have a big impact, not only on the winner, but on the points race as well. As Kirchner battled Mike Belling for the top spot on lap 11, the two cars bumped, and Kirchner drifted high on the track. Third-place driver Steve Carlson saw the opening, and ducked under both Kirchner and Belling to take the lead, as he earned win number three on the season.

Kirchner and Brad Powell then bumped on lap 18, giving points leader Kevin Nuttleman a change to extend his lead as Powell finished 15th, 12 spots behind Nuttleman.

Belling outgunned Jeff Krueger at the start of the CITGO 25, and looked ready to run away with his fifth win of the season five laps in. Kirchner was the next car around Krueger, followed by Powell and Carlson. Carlson gut underneath Powell on lap eight, and closed on the lead pair, as the top three were nose to tail by lap ten. Two laps later, Carlson was the beneficiary of Kirchner's bump, and cruised to the win.

The only two yellows of the race both flew on lap 18, first with the Kirchner-Powell incident in turn three, and then on the restart, as a nine-car accident erupted on the backstretch. Kurt Thicke lost control of his 56 machine coming out of turn two, and with the tightly bunched field, cars had no place to go, as Kirchner and Powell got caught up again, along with Isaak Owen, Mike Ehde, Tim Nelson, Todd Oliver, Troy Goodenough, Tim Nelson and Greg Croell.

Belling held on to second behind Carlson at the finish, followed by Nuttleman, Paul Proksch and Tony Bagstad. Bob Timm had a strong performance, finishing sixth, followed by Todd Korish, Rick Wateski, Krueger and Jim Hagel.

No qualifying was held for the Late Models, as a late afternoon shower forced them to be lined up by their fastest time of the season. Bob Timm and Bill Niles won qualifying heats, while the Bud Dash wins went to Rick Wateski and Brent Kirchner. Greg Croell advanced to the feature by taking the B-Main checkered.

A seven-car accident in turn one on the final lap of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature set up a one lap shootout to the finish, but Chand Wehling held on to take his first feature of the win. Greg Scheck, who led for two laps at mid-race, gave it everything he had in the final two turns trying to get the win, but he slid high in turn four, and Corey Jankowski was able to get by him to finish second.

Scheck took third, followed by Blake Horstman, Doug Lee and Chuck Timm. Larry Bolster, Jr., Trent Boettcher, Dave Tradup and Scott Stingl rounded out the top ten.

Dan Gilster set fast time at 86.291 MPH for the Sportsman drivers, topping second-quickest Tony Ciano by a full two-tenths of a second. Aaron Hass won the non-qualifying heat, while the qualifying heat wins went to Larry Bolster, Jr. and Trent Boettcher. The Odd and Even Bud Dashes went to Blake Horstman and Ralph Barrette. Jimmy Gilster came away with the checkered flag in the B-Main.

John Olson has had some brushes with the top spot in the United Auto Supply feature this season, but has never taken the checkered. That changed on Saturday night, as he held off Jason Stark and Craig Kohlmeier for the win. They were followed by Kelly Schendel, Bill Inglett, Dale Jacob, Alan Wolf and Jason Bolster.

Les Stanfield won the B-Main, heat wins went to Joey Johnson, Jason Stark and Craig Kohlmeier, while Adam Degenhardt won the Bud Dash, and Branden Berg came away the winner in the Outhouse Race.
