(West Salem July 29, 2000) - To make a run at another track championship in the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model division at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, Mike Belling new he had to get by both Brad Powell and defending champ Kevin Nuttleman in the last seven weeks of the season to do it. He kept Nuttleman in his rear view mirror, and got by Powell for the lead on lap 12 as he claimed his fourth feature win of the season, the most of any driver.

Isaak Owen led the opening lap from the pole, before turning it over to Brent Kirchner for four laps. Powell took the lead on lap five, getting underneath Kirchner as they headed into turn one, and Belling was right on Powell's bumper as he followed into second.

Belling looked to the inside twice, then went to the outside, as the two cars ran two laps side by side before Belling was able to make the pass stick in turn three of lap 12.

Powell tried to get the spot back, even taking over first briefly on the backstretch after a lap 18 yellow, but belling pulled away down the stretch for the win.

Powell was second, followed by Kirchner, Nuttleman, Owen and Mark Lamoreaux. Tom Carlson, Marv DeGarmo, Tim Nelson and Tony Bagstad rounded out the top ten.

J. Herbst shook up the B-Main as he spun on the frontstretch on lap four, spreading the field out when he not only kept the car off the wall, but got it back under power and into the fray.

That left five cars at the front of the field, and Bill Niles was the odd man out, as he finished fifth. Greg Scheck earned his first late model checkered flag with the win.

Nuttleman continued his torrid pace in qualifying earning the top position for the fifth time this season, with all of those coming during July. Rick Wateski and Kurt Thicke took the heat wins, while the Bud Dashes went to Greg Croell and Mark Lamoreaux.

Jeff Baker's persistence paid off in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature, as he pulled ahead of race leader Blake Horstman two times, but could not make the pass stick. On the final lap, he went to the high side again, the cars went through the third and fourth corners side by side, and Baker managed to edge his way over the line first for the feature win. Horstman led 12 of the 15 laps, but not the one that counted as he took second. Rick Shisler, Corey Jankowski and Tom Thill rounded out the top five.

Corey Jankowski was quick timer, while points leader Dan Gilster failed to pass the post qualifying inspection, and had to run the non-qualifying heat, which he won over Todd Lockington. Jimmy Gilster and Scott Stingl took the qualifying heat wins, while the Odd and Even Bud Dashes went to Dave Stetzer and Rick Shisler.

Les Stanfield was in the right place at the right time in the Thunderstox feature, as he held off Kelly Schendel and Dale Jacob down the stretch for third. It became the right place at the right time when the top two finishers failed to pass post race inspection, giving Stanfield the win. Dan Secor and Branden Berg rounded out the top five in the feature.

John Olson, Kelly Schendel and Jason Stark took heat wins in the Thunderstox division, while Al Bartels barely held off Adam Degenhardt to win the Bud Dash. Dale Jacob earned his way into the feature by taking the win in the B-Main.

Ryan Larson led the first five laps of the Orange Feature for the Hornets, but a lapped car spun right in front of him on lap six, and he slammed into him, doing considerable front end damage to his car, and turning the lead over to Rick Shermerhorn. Three laps later, Keith Kirchner moved by on the outside, as he took the win. Todd Lemke finished second, followed by Rick Schermerhorn, Dan Osthoff and Jerrod Logging.

Bruce Schuttemeier chased down Troy Opsahl on lap, but coming through turn three, he was hit from behind and driven up an over a retaining wall, bringing out the yellow, and giving Opsahl the lead back. Pete Arentz put the pressure on Opsahl on the restart, taking the lead briefly on lap ten, before lapped traffic forced him back behind Opsahl.

On lap 13, Arentz went by on the outside, as he came away with the win. Jamie Dummer took second, followed by Opsahl, Keith Ringelstetter and Dan Erdmann.

Ryan Larson, Rick Plasek and Keith Kirchner took the Hornets heat wins.
