(West Salem, WI -- June 24, 2000) While Mike Belling held off all challenges in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model feature, a first-lap accident in the Grand National Sportsman division feature sent two cars along the backstretch wall, and up and over the wall in turn three. Chand Wehling and Tom Thill were unhurt in the incident, which happened right in front of the 25-car field for the Furniture Gallery 15-lap main. Chuck Timm, who has had his share of bad luck over the last two seasons, avoided the incident, and came away with the win.
In the Midwest Fuels Late Model feature, Belling started on the pole, out dueled rookie Todd Korish early and pulled away from second-place Marv DeGarmo. He built up a four-second lead by lap eight, but that lead evaporated a lap later, as a four-car incident broke out behind an ill-handling Brent Kirchner machine, bringing out the yellow/
Belling opened up a lead on DeGarmo again on the restart, but DeGarmo had defending track champion Kevin Nuttleman all over his back bumper. Nuttleman looked high on lap nine, but DeGarmo was able to hold onto the second spot. On lap 11, Nuttleman appeared to have a run on the inside coming out of turn four, but again, could not make the pass stick. Finally on lap 13, Nuttleman passed on the outside, but he lost the position as Bill Niles slammed into the turn three wall before the lap was completed, bringing out the yellow and resetting the field to the order at the end of the previous lap. On the second restart, Nuttleman left little to chance, working under DeGarmo coming out of turn two, and taking over second by the time the two white cars came roaring out of turn four. He set his sights on leader Belling, as Paul Proksch followed underneath DeGarmo, and gave chase to the lead pair.
With the dampness in the air from an afternoon rain, and the heat of the engines the only thing keeping the fog in the area from settling in on the speedway, Nuttleman started sliding through the corners as he tried to chase down Belling. Belling's lead was down to just over two lengths by lap 19, but Nuttleman's handling problems allowed the 43 car to pull away again by lap 21. On lap 21, Proksch used the high side to pull alongside Nuttleman, taking the second spot in turn three. With less than two laps to go, Proksch didn't have enough time to chase down Belling, as Belling claimed win number two on the season.
Proksch was second, followed by Nuttleman, Mark Lamoreaux, Steve Carlson and DeGarmo. Points leader Brad Powell finished seventh, while Tom Carlson Tony Bagstad and Kurt Thicke rounded out the top ten.
There was no qualifying held because of Fan Photo Night, as the Late Models and Sportsman cars were lined up by the fastest qualifying times of the year. Charlie Menard claimed his first-ever checkered by taking the B-Main, as he, Troy Goodenough, Frank Doherty and Todd Oliver advanced into the feature. Heat wins went to Bill Niles and Bob Timm, while Lamoreaux and Belling took the Bud Dash wins.
All the fireworks in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature came before one lap was completed, but the way they worked was fine with Chuck Timm. Timm, who seemed to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time the last couple of seasons, steered clear of the first lap incident, got by Kevin Eddy on lap eight and held off Rob Mahan for the win.
On the opening lap, Wehling drifted high out of turn two, and Thill followed. As cars checked to avoid the two, Thill hit Wehling from behind, and both cars slid the entire length of the backstretch wall, then up and over the wall on turn three, disappearing from fan's view down the hill towards the La Crosse River.
Eddy took over on the restart, leading seven laps before finishing forth behind Timm, Mahan and points leader Dan Gilster. Blake Horstman, Jeff Baker, Sam Anderson, Corey Jankowski, Randy Steinhoff and Don Henderson rounded out the top ten.
Heat winners were Brandon Haag, Paul Mahlum, Jr. and Phil Schreier, while Jon Barrette and Don Henderson won the Bud Dashes. Larry Bolster, Jr. won the B-main to qualify for the feature, where he finished 15th.
While Timm got lucky on lap one and came away a winner, Adam Degenhardt got just as lucky with just two turns remaining in the United Supply Thunderstox feature, and came away with his second checkered flag of the season. Jeff Schaitel led most of the way, but got caught up in lapped traffic in the last five laps, turning the lead over to Rob Curran on lap 13. Schaitel worked his way under Degenhardt for second and tried to get under Curran for the lead on the final lap. The two cars touched, sending Curran through he infield and Lake Speed, and Schaitel into the depths of the rain-made lake, Degenhardt stayed outside to take the win.
Curran managed to get through to take second, but he moisture he brought onto the track send other cars sliding and spinning across the line. Dale Jacob made it cleanly to get third, followed by Al Bartels, a spinning Les Stanfield and Eric Bucholz. Dean Ashbacher, George Prise, Mary Schill and Jes Tenner rounded out the top ten.
Dale Jacob won the B-main, heat wins went to Jes Tenner, Eric Bucholz and Alan Wolf, and Degenhardt also took the Bud Dash win. The Junior Cup cars made their first appearance of the year at the speedway, and Brian Shonasky of Wyocena came away the winner, as he held off Ray Kreyer and Lee Kreyer down the stretch for the win. Reed Powers and Dean Powers round out the top five in the feature, while Scott Kleist and Shonasky took the heat wins. <pre> Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Models Furniture Gallery 25-1.
