Notes of Interest: The Hickory 100 is the first of two races scheduled for the .363 mile oval in 1997. Since 1975, the Hickory Motor Speedway has been a mainstay on the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series schedule, hosting at least one race for the Series in all but three of the twenty two seasons of the touring series. All-time Series win leader Dean Combs won his very first NASCAR Goody's Dash Series race at this historic oval in only the second race for the series in 1975. Combs went on to win six more events at Hickory by the end of 1982. Another member of the Combs family, Ned won his first, and only race here in 1979. You can bet that Ned would love to pick up number two right here at his home track. Larry Caudill picked up his second career win here at Hickory in 1977, and since that win, the veteran racer has visited the HMS victory lane on three other occasions, most recently, in the spring races of 1994 and 1995.Other notables who have been to victory lane in a NASCAR Goody's Dash Series car include, Phil Parsons, Billy Standridge, Rob Moroso, Hut Stricklin, and Johnny Chapman. This year, Mike Swaim Jr. will be attempting to win his fifth race in a row, but an estimated 35 other NASCAR Goody's Dash Series drivers will also be trying to stop his impressive string of victories. Will Hobgood and Robert Huffman are two of the drivers who will be trying to put an end to Swaim's string. The two split the races held here in 1996 and are certainly among the favorites in this event. But, don't forget, Swaim Jr. has also tasted the fruits of victory here in the fall of 1995 and will undoubtedly be a formidable force to contend with. TV: None
