BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 6,2001 . . . There was great joy in Bechtelsville on Saturday night as "Mighty Kerry" hit a home run. Actually it was Kerry Kratz driving to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified stock car feature race at Grandview Speedway. It was the first win of the season for the Bechtelsville resident.
And in the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature Chuck Sennott, a former upstate New York racer now living in Gilbertsville, PA was able to lead all 20 laps to grab his first win of the season.
Kratz, who had last week lead 28 of 30 laps only to have victory slip out of his hands when Craig VonDohren was able to get by with just two laps to go, started in fourth spot. For the first eight laps Kratz and Donny Erb battled for the top spot with Erb having the upper hand. On 9th lap it was Kerry Kratz in front and that is where he kept the Hatfield Quality Meats/Steve's Corner Deli #87 for the balance of the race.
Jon Kellner, the all time leading late model feature winner at Grandview, put his Three S Electric entry in second and pressured Kratz for much of the feature event. Terry Meitzler, former champion was in the battle as were Kenny Gilmore and Craig VonDohren. It was a five car battle for the top spot with Kratz able to hold on for the victory.
Kellner held on for second followed by Gilmore who had come 23rd starting spot. Terry Meitzler got fourth and VonDohren, the winner the previous Saturday, was fifth.
The Timber Wolf Hard Charger Award goes to Meme DeSantis, unofficially, after he came from 30th starting spot to finish seventh. He will pick up an extra $200.
In the NASCAR Late Models it was the Chuck Sennott show as he took the lead on the first lap and lead all 20 laps. Bill Henning had started on the pole and spun coming off the fourth turn before a lap was completed giving the pole start to Sennott. The Gilbertsville, PA racer held off challenges from Chris Wojnar and Dean Stoudt to gave his first victory of the season. Fourth spot went to Ed Trimbur followed by Rick Todorow.
Qualifying heat races for the NASCAR Modifieds, close to 60 on hand, went to Barry Readinger, Tom Umbenhauer, Ray Swinehart, Craig VonDohren and Sam Schoenly. The consolation events were won by Shawn Reimert, Kenny Gilmore and Doug Manmiller. Craig VonDohren brought the Mrs T's Pierogies #114 home first in the Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash worth $435.
In qualifying events for the late models wins went to Chris Wojnar, Bill Henning and Chuck Sennott.
