Bechtelsville, PA - What looked like a sure win for Barry Readinger turned into the second win of the season for Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville) as he wheeled the Hatfield Quality Meats/Steve's Corner Deli #87 Modified to victory in the 30-lap Arctic Cat/Craftsman Tools NASCAR Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. In the companion 20-lap main event for the NASCAR Late Models Ron Kline (Salfordville) drove the Kline/Grebe owned Lopez Plastering #FX6 to his second win of the season.
Todd Marburger was quick to be his mount in front of the pack at the drop of the green for the 29 car starting field in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge Modified feature race. The lead was short lived as Ron Seltmann Jr. was able move to the front of the pack. At the six lap mark Barry Readinger brought the Devine Transport #70D to the lead with Keith Brightbill second. Both racers were looking for their first career wins at Grandview Speedway.
At the midway point Readinger had a comfortable lead on the field but now Kerry Kratz was second. With 25 laps in the record book Readinger and Kratz were running side-by-side in a chase for the $2200 first place money.
On the 28th lap, with the leaders running so very close, Readinger bounced out of the groove in turn two and Kratz was able to take advantage putting the Don Schaeffer owned #87 in front of the pack. For the final two circuits Readinger worked at trying to get his lead back but to no avail as Kratz was able to hold on for his second win of the season but it came after a long dry spell.
In victory lane Kratz pointed out that he was able to run low and was able to gain ground on Readinger as he ran high. Once Readinger saw how well he (Kratz) was working he moved down to the low groove and Kratz thought the race was lost. It was only the "bounce out of the groove" in turn two that allowed Kratz to get under Readinger and grab the lead and the victory. Second spot went to Readinger (Reading) followed by Keith Brightbill (Mohnton), Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) and Doug Manmiller (Sinking Spring).
In the NASCAR Late Model feature Mike Steinmetz put his TV 51 entry in front of the pack but Bill Henning was quick to take the Henning Supermarket/WNPV-AM Radio entry to the front. Ron Kline moved up to challenge Henning at the eight lap mark. On the ninth lap Kline was in front and the field was ordered to a single file restart on a caution due to the many cautions with less than half the race complete. Kline was able to hold off the late race challenge of Sam Schlosberg and Chuck Schutz to earn his second win of the season with his six cylinder late model. Second spot went to Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) in a strong late race effort. Third place went to Sam Schlosberg (Green Lane) followed by eight feature winner Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) and early leader Bill Henning (Lansdale).
In the qualifying heat races for the 51 Modifieds on hand wins went to Cliff Quinn, Ron Seltmann Jr., Craig VonDohren, Ray Swinehart and Barry Readinger. The consolation races were won by Jon Kellner, Kevin Hartnett and Mike Gular. The Cash Dash worth $460 went to Ron Seltmann Jr.
The Late Model qualifying events were won by Rick Todorow, Ron Kline and Bill Henning while Lee Miller got the top honors in the consolation race.
Jeff Strunk continues to lead the NASCAR Modified standings while Randy Stoudt is still tops in the Late Models. Just three point events remain on the schedule for the Modifieds and the Late Models.
